Yahoo! Flat Stanley was happy to explore the River Walk or Paseo del Rio, which is a path meandering along both sides of a channelized river. According to the guest informant (2005), when the rains came, the San Antonio River would flood, and Robert H. H. Hugman tamed this act of nature by creating a three foot or meter deep channel for the water to reside full time between 1939 and 1941 (p. 14).

Businesses flourish beside the river at a level up to seven meters or 20 feet beneath the vehicle-filled streets. Low profile tourist and taxi boats are available to enhance the legends and move people along the way.

The path is planted with a mix of flowers and trees interspersed with waterfalls, fountains, and benches. The cypress and cottonwood trees have dropped their leaves, while subtropical trees and shrubs were blooming in winter month of January!

Arched bridges of limestone periodically connect the two paths along the river. Winter in San Antonio included days of sunshine and 70 degree Fahrenheit temperatures.

Flat Stanley sees the Alamo, one of many church mission structures preserved in the area. Missions began in this area in the early 1700s, when priests came to establish settlements and convert peoples of the area to the Catholic faith.

In 1836, a battle occurred between a Mexican army of thousands lead by General Santa Anna and a group hundreds, which included legendary heros Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Although the army defeated the peoples in the Alamo over the 13 day conflict, the fight became a symbol of independence for Texans. |
